Adults: PO 15 to 30 mL followed by 3 to 4 glasses of water. May repeat dose within 20 min if vomiting does not occur.
Children younger than 1 yr of age: PO 5 to 10 mL followed by ½ glass of water.
Children 1 to 12 yr of age: PO 15 mL followed by 1 to 2 glasses of water.
Produces vomiting by local irritant effect and stimulation of chemoreceptor trigger zone.
Do not use in semiconscious, unconscious, pregnant, or lactating persons; do not use if strychnine, corrosives (eg, alkalis, strong acids), or petroleum distillates have been ingested.
Use Cautiously in:
CV: Heart conduction disturbances; atrial fibrillation; fatal myocarditis.
Will absorb ipecac syrup. Give activated charcoal only after ipecac syrup has produced vomiting.
Milk or carbonated beverages
Do not administer with ipecac syrup.
Therapeutic Classification: emetic
Absorption: Absorption is minimal.
Distribution: Primarily distributed locally into the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism/Excretion: Excretion of emetine is very slow; detectable in urine for 60 days.
